Unbreakable is a series of 14 portraits that I shot of amazingly talented dancers that I had the opportunity to work with 2 years ago. Due to some family emergencies, it was put on hold. In fall 2014, I decided it was time to revive the project and finally complete it. This is the first phase, a glimpse of what is to come. You may RSVP for the upcoming photo exhibition here.
Told through a series of striking live-action urban dance portraits, Unbreakable is the story of the indomitable human spirit and the way of the righteous warrior.
Unbreakable was mothered from within a dark era in creator Katy Chan’s life, when she retreated into an old form of dreamland escapism.
In Unbreakable, we meet fourteen beings and their alter egos, some coming from as near as the solitary void of the outer-GTA suburbs and others from lost and distant realms; even one story of a sorceress hatched from the ancient ruins of an intergalactic apocalyptic calamity. But regardless of planetary origin, each of these beings shares one common bond. They have harnessed, developed, trained, mastered – call it what you will – and are living their true expression through the power of dance.
Unbreakable was mothered from within a dark era in creator Katy Chan’s life, when she retreated into an old form of dreamland escapism. She remembered time in her youth when the world of Japanese anime and superhero trading cards provided her with a cosmic source of strength, where ordinary people harness their own unique force within to battle the darkness without.
The intention of Unbreakable is that alike spirits gather, rise above, and dance away the night against the backdrop of these stark and kaleidoscopic visual chronicles of real life heroes and heroines.
Instead of turning inwards, she used this fantasy world to access a new strength. She teamed up with Frost – student practitioner of the arts, teacher of the many, warrior of life, and true citizen and heir of Atlantian territory – who shared her bold vision. Together they soon brought together a community of artists and dancers whose individual stories of life and dance would come alive through these intimate portraits. They are now in collaboration for Part 2 of Unbreakable, which will be explored in Fall/Winter 2015.

I am just a bystander, an observer, of these amazing people’s stories; without them this work would not be possible. They inspire me to add colour and contrast, and to build a story.
